The materials you get for projects are in their raw form. Reshape them to fit the project. One such material is glass.

Glass is a solid material that is often transparent. It is made by melting sand, soda ash, and limestone at extreme temperatures. The glass we use for construction is at room temperature. Working with it isn’t as easy as working wood. This is because of its brittle nature. Non-reinforced glass breaks easily. This makes putting holes through it a tricky task.

We are here to guide you on how to drill through the glass.

How To Drill

  • Place the glass sheet on the workstation. Secure it in place by restricting its movement along the perimeter.
  • Mark the part you want to drill with tape. It will help you pinpoint the point of impact as well as prevent the tool from sliding off. We advise it to mark leaving 3/4th-inch space from the edge of the glass.
  • The best tool for the job is a power drill with adjustable rpm (rotations per minute). Set the drill to a low 400 rpm speed for the initial contact. More than that can risk cracking the glass.
  • Pour a drop of lubricant. You can use any type of oil. This soaks up a bit of the heat produced when the high-speed drill works on the glass surface.
  • Place the drill on the tape and with the slightest of pressure, proceed to drill the hole. We advise using a drill bit of 1/8 to 3/32-inch.
  • Once the base is set, you can remove the tape. Add drops of lubricant if the point of contact looks too dry.
  • You will need to take breaks in between the process. Working on it continuously leads to unwanted heating that causes it to crack or break. Blow out excess dust around the hole occasionally.
  • Once you reach the halfway point, free the glass and flip it over. Continue the same process on the other side. We do this to make even holes on both sides.
  • Post-completion, use sandpaper to smoothen out the rough surfaces. Glass is sharp, uneven surfaces can lead to cuts later.

Tips To Keep In Mind

This gives you a basic idea of how to punch a hole in the glass. It is a work of precision and patience. We suggest keeping these tips in mind.

Speed

Speed is a variable that is different in the various aspects involved. The speed of the drill is crucial to have an excellent result. Depending on the thickness of the glass, you should set the rpm between 300-450. The other speed is the speed of drilling. Unlike the other, you must keep this slow.

Safety

Glass is a brittle substance by nature. It is possible that small shards of glasses are blown everywhere while drilling. Use tear-resistant gloves and protective eyewear. Cuts are one of the construction hazards that you should fear.

We make the job of drilling through glass possible with the most important weapon for remodeling- tools. The right tool for the job is essential.
