The roofs of most of the houses are more or less the same. However, a new trend in the home improvement industry, skylights, is increasingly becoming popular that transforms a boring roof into an interesting one.

A full remodel of the roof can turn out to be both costly and time-consuming. Enter: Skylight.

What Is A Skylight?

First things first, let’s understand what a skylight is. A skylight is a structure that helps to transmit natural light inside the house. It has a close resemblance to a roof window, but unlike the aforementioned; it does not open. They come in many materials but are predominantly made from plastic or glass. The former can be more economical than the other, but the latter provides long-lasting durability. Homeowners have different uses for skylights. Some have them installed due to the natural light factor, others consider the style and the rest do it for the boost in the energy efficiency of the house.

Fixed on the roof, there are different types of skylights to choose from. Your client can choose any one of the following according to their need:

Fixed Skylight

Fixed skylights are the most common and least expensive among the available options. The average opening required to install them is 22 ½ x 22 ½. Made out of limited glass, these types of skylights are fixed in the roof and cannot be opened.

This feature helps in conserving energy as it doesn’t allow the passage of air.

Tubular Skylight

As the name suggests, these are made in a tubular structure. Tubular skylights have a built-in tunnel with a diameter ranging between 10 inches and 20 inches. The tube helps to connect the ceiling of the room in which these are installed to the roof. Light enters through a panel on the roof and bounces from the internal mirrors in the tube to reach the room. They are best used in hallways and foyers.

These can be built around the obstructions but are considerably more expensive than the fixed ones.

Vented Skylights

From the outside, vented skylights can resemble fixed skylights. The core difference between the two is that the vented skylights allow air ventilation.

This feature is sought out by many owners as they believe cross ventilation to be an important part of any room. Another benefit these provide is that they can be fitted easily into any room that requires additional lighting. They are available in both manual and electric variants. You can open or close the ventilation with electric vented skylights.

Installation

The installation of a skylight is not a complicated process. The only two things to look out for specifically is that you do not damage the roof structure and safety (due to working at a height). You still need to be prepared for any crash-related injuries on the worksite.

Suggest a skylight for rooms that do not have enough windows. They are also a great idea to naturally light up the attic for daytime use.
