We advise homeowners to apply a fresh coat of paint every 8-12 years. Depending on the climatic conditions, previous job, and the selection of pain, that time can vary. Well-maintained paint jobs can even go beyond the 12-year mark.
Painting concrete floors help give it a new look. The job is simple. You will need the right paint, a vacuum cleaner, a paintbrush, a paint roller, a paint tray, and a paint scraper. In some circumstances, you will also need a putty knife and a concrete crack sealer.
Fix The Area
Examine the floor. The surface should be even and devoid of cracks. Concrete flooring is sturdy but if it constantly exposed to high temperatures, it can crack.
You can fix minor cracking with a concrete crack sealer. Clean any dirt in and around the crack. After that, carefully apply the sealer. Use a putty knife to remove extra spillage. A more serious issue is spalling. We refer it to the area of concrete that has multiple cracks. Fix it with these tips.
Choose The Paint
The type of paint that you use is important. There are things to look beyond the texture and color.
We suggest using epoxy paint over other options. These are tough and are easy to maintain. Latex paint is a close second but doesn’t hold as well as epoxy.
Prep It Up
Prepare the area for painting. Remove the previous coats of paint to make the floor even. Use the vacuum cleaner to remove dust and debris. The floor should be clean and even before painting.
Use painter’s tape on the perimeter of the floor. This protects the baseboard and gives clean lines towards the end. Open up the windows and close the HVAC vents using plastic.
Painting The Floor
Start by applying the primer coat first. Leave it for a few hours until it is dried completely. The primer makes it easier for the paint to settle onto the floor.
Take out some paint in the tray and use the paintbrush to guide it around the edges. Stroke the paintbrush from the board to the inside of the room. The paintbrush is the best option for painting in tight spaces. Use the paint roller to cover larger spaces in between. Dip it in the paint tray and roll it back and forth over the floor. Start from the farthest corner from the exit and paint while approaching the exit. Try to keep an even stroke to avoid uneven paint. Give it time to dry before you apply another coat.
Clean Up
After the last layer, give at least 4 hours for it to dry completely. Remove the painter’s tape. Open up the HVAC vents after the drying period is complete.
Cleaning up the equipment is important to avoid dried paint residue. Use warm water and dish soap to clean the paintbrush and roller.
Following these tips will let you do an amazing job. Follow up with your client after a few years to see how their paint job is holding up. These are the points where other contractors fall short.
